Extensive research has been conducted on the links between diet and chronic disease, but little has been conducted on methods to assess overall diet quality. To measure how well American diets conform to recommendations, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP) developed the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), a single summary measure (or "report card") of overall diet quality in 1995 (Kennedy, Bowman, Lino, Gerrior & Basiotis, 1999; Frazao, 1999).
