Two historic black denominations have moved a step closer to merger, with delegates to a recent gathering of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church adopting a plan of union with the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church as a "working document."
Bishop Marshall Gilmore of Dallas, who was named senior bishop during the General Conference of the CME Church in Atlanta, said merger could occur in 2008. Each denomination meets every four years, so officials of the two groups will meet again in 2006 at the next AME Zion meeting to continue dealing with the details of union.
