Tons of Chinese spinach have been recalled in Japan due to pesticide contamination, most of it chlorpyrifos. Nichirei, the largest frozen food processor in Japan, was among those affected.

Family restaurant chain Jonathan's was apparently the first to feel the impact. The Tokyo metropolitan government ordered its spinach recalled May 24 and also banned further sales by S.H. Corp., the importer that sold the spinach to the chain. Jonathan's immediately stopped serving spinach at all 322 of its restaurants in Tokyo and neighboring prefectures.
