Early identification of children who are at risk for developmental delays is a primary focus of physical therapy for preterm infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). A preliminary study by Girolami and Campbell (1) suggests that early identification of these infants with early introduction of preventive interventions may avert functional limitations at a later age. The effectiveness of prevention, however, depends in part on the accuracy with which diagnostic tests can identify infants who are likely to benefit from these interventions.
