Some of the best family memories are tied up in apron strings. These reminiscences may be a bit hazy around the edges, but nonetheless they're as warm as a kitchen with pies in the oven.

Coming from a large family, I remember my Grandma Casson, always bustling around her noisy kitchen wearing a pinafore apron, complete with feminine ruffles.

I also recall interviewing culinary legend James Beard and noticing the French apron he always had at hand. And I am never without a less-than-glamorous work apron in my own kitchen: hunter green, dependable, indestructible.
