There are certain things we believe in - because we have to believe in them.
The good Samaritan, for example, is not supposed to die badly. The symbol of hope - and it is hope, above all else, that Jeannie VanVelkinburgh's life represented - is not supposed to die without any.
And yet, nearly five years after she risked her life for another, VanVelkinburgh died clutching a bottle of pain pills, having told her younger son and her neighbor and her siblings that she was struggling to keep the will to live.
