This summer has been a scorcher and the heat has been not only uncomfortable, but deadly, too. In Cook County, 31 people have died so far of heat-related causes.
That heat can kill can be shocking news, but this year's death toll pales compared to the summer of 1995, and its relative inconspicuousness may trace directly to that crisis. During a single week in July 1995, more than 700 Chicagoans died in one of the deadliest heat waves in U.S. history.
