Introduction

When specifically sorbed ions react with soil, the charge on the soil is changed. Anions make it more negative; cations more positive. With increasing time, it appears that the reacting ion penetrates towards the centre of the reacting particle. Consequently the change in charge becomes `semi-permanent'. This change in charge alters the surface properties of the soil particles. Of the many specifically sorbed ions that can react with soil, phosphate is the only one added in sufficient quantity and frequency for the effects to be important. For convenience, I shall refer to these secondary effects of phosphate as P2 effects.
