Marine reserves such as the San Diego-La Jolla Ecological Reserve (SDLJER) are quickly becoming a primary tool in the management of coastal marine ecosystems in California. The San Diego-La Jolla Ecological Reserve was proposed in 1961 and established 10 years later.
