Calling Roy Haynes a bridge from jazz's past to its present doesn't really do the Roxbury-born drum legend justice. At age 77, long after many artists have stopped making fresh contributions to the music, Haynes keeps shaping jazz's future.
Those contributions will be center stage Saturday night at the Tanglewood Jazz Festival in Lenox, when Haynes leads four of modern jazz's most celebrated younger players in a tribute to one of the music's revered pioneers, Charlie Parker.
Bassist Christian McBride, trumpeter Roy Hargrove, alto man Kenny Garrett and pianist Dave Kikoski join the drummer on a double-bill with pianist/vocalist Diana Krall.
