DEL MAR - Some wonder why War Emblem is here at all, at Del Mar to face older horses and a tactical trial in today's Pacific Classic, when he could have been sent to Saratoga to run against fellow 3-year-olds in Saturday's Travers Stakes for an equivalent $1 million purse.

But the question answers itself.

At the head of the deepest field of handicap-division thoroughbreds assembled in 2002, War Emblem is where a Kentucky Derby winner and top championship candidate should be, on a stage befitting the star of the sport.
