The battle of the fuels: Going to school
Recently in my hvac class, a student asked about television advertising by our local gas and electric utilities. "Someone must be lying because each is claiming to be the cheapest source for heating," he said.
The gas utility stated that natural gas had a 3-to-1 price advantage over electric heat, while the electric utility claimed that a heat pump was the cheapest way to heat, and you get air conditioning besides.
Neither was lying but neither was telling the whole truth. The gas folks were correct if they were comparing gas heat with electric resistance heating. On the other hand, the electric people ...
