TWO small parts of the south-west corner of the Soviet Union illustrate the fearful complexity of the tribulations that nationalism is bringing to the country. The first round of the parliamentary election in the republic of Georgia took place on October 28th. Although not all the results were in by Thursday, it seemed that a coalition of seven parties committed to immediate independence had captured about two-thirds of the vote. The Communist party, which had hoped to win, got little more than 200/o. Georgia is set to become the sixth Soviet republic to declare its independence.
