According to the article "Should You Replace Your Daily Aspirin with Arginine?" by Owen R. Fonorow, the amino acid arginine can reduce platelet aggregation. Platelet aggregation prevents blood loss by forming clots during injuries, yet too much clumping in blood vessels increases the risk of heart attacks. Researchers say that nitric oxide (NO), derived from arginine, inhibits platelet clumping. Drs. M.W. Radomski, R.M.J. Palmer, and Salvador Monacada discovered that blood platelets contain a form of nitric oxide synthase, the enzyme used to make NO from arginine. Endothethial cells can also produce NO.
