A new heart-lung by-pass machine called CORx System is now being used at Cleveland Clinic. The CORx System, manufactured by CardioVention Inc. (Santa Clara, California), is smaller than traditional machines. In addition to oxygenating and pumping blood when the heart is stopped during surgery, this system can be used for backup circulatory support during beating-heart surgeries. Because it requires little or no fluid to prime the pump, the CORx System causes less dilution than standard bypass machines. Dilution causes poor blood clotting. "This is the ...
