Flushing Meadows, NY (Sports Network) - Two-time defending champion Venus Williams and third-seeded Jennifer Capriati both earned double-bagel victories in their first-round matches Tuesday at the U.S. Open.
The second-seeded Venus handled Croatian Mirjana Lucic 6-0, 6-0 in 50 minutes at Ashe Stadium, while Capriati breezed past Bethanie Mattek in the same fashion.
Martina Hingis, seeded ninth in this year's tournament, was forced to three sets by Marissa Irvin. She eventually held on for a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 victory.
