LABOUR leader Ruairi Quinn yesterday announced he was to step down after almost six years in the job.

His resignation came after a general election performance widely seen as disappointing.

And yesterday speculation was already rife on who would replace Mr Quinn.

Among the favourites for the job are communications spokesman Eamon Gilmore and deputy leader Brendan Howlin.

Health spokeswoman Liz McManus and transport spokeswoman Joan Burton are also thought likely to throw their hats into the ring.
