HAS EAST HAMPTON'S `SHOP 'TIL YOU DROP' STOPPED?
How do you say business is tough in East Hampton, Long Island, the fabled seaside playground for the heavies in men's wear, communications and finance?
Over the years, they worked hard and succeeded in earning the reputation of big spenders. And come what may -- including the Oct. 17, 1987, Wall Street debacle -- they kept on spending. In fact, the expression "Shop 'til you drop" could have been invented in this weekend/vacation town.
But they haven't been spending this year -- yet. The movie house is still getting the long lines, but the bellwether businesses -- the boutiques, real estate offices ...
