SOUTH BEND, Ind. _ It was late and he was hungry, so Tyrone Willingham pulled into a downtown McDonald's one night last spring. What he got was not on the menu.
The drive-thru attendant recognized Willingham and asked for an autograph. Soon, there were dozens of McDonald's employees and patrons lined up at his car. He signed for 30 minutes, then drove off with cold french fries.
No, Tyrone Willingham is not in Palo Alto anymore.
But he's had no trouble adjusting to his celebrity status as head football coach at Notre Dame. Since leaving Stanford on Dec. 30, his 48th birthday, Willingham has been a smash hit in South Bend.
