In the early 1950s--the days of black-and-white television and twelve-inch screens--comedy was king (Milton Berle, Bob Hope, Jack Benny, and George Burns and Gracie Allen all had their own shows). But there was only one emperor, and his name was Caesar--Sid Caesar. What a court he had: Mel Brooks, Larry Gelbart, Neil Simon and Woody Allen wrote for Your Show of Shows and Caesar's Hour. Imogene Coca, Nanette Fabray, Howie Morris and Carl Reiner were his onstage team. It was live and it was brilliant.
