The Threepenny Opera Lyric Hammersmith
THE Threepenny Opera infamously epitomises the sleaze and corruption of Weimar Germany, so it is disappointing to be confronted by a production that smacks more of church-hall amateur dramatics. The National Youth Theatre has frequently soared to heroic heights in its endeavours - last year's Nicholas Nickleby proved a worthwhile theatrical marathon at six and a half hours - but this sorry portrayal of prostitutes and vagabonds is badly frayed around its not so dissolute edges.
If decadence in between-the wars Germany could be described as a chocolate ...
