The multistranded, multicolored glass bead necklaces from the Abacus Collection not only liven up women's wardrobes, but serve as communication devices, as well.
The necklaces, crafted by Zulu women in South Africa, incorporate traditions from the ethnic group. According to Bonnie Fogg, who imports the line through her Aurora, Ill.-based company, Africa Designs, the beads and their colors were once used as a means of communication by young Zulu women. Red, for instance, means intense love and longing, whereas light turquoise signifies someone who talks too much and cannot keep a secret.
