Unipetrol wants state to foot CZK 4 bn for Spolana environmental damage

Prague August 30 INTERFAX EUROPE - Unipetrol, the state-owned petrochemical utility, wants the National Property Fund (FNM) to foot a CZK 3.7 bn bill for environmental damage caused by a Unipetrol subsidiary, the Spolana chemical company.

Unipetrol CEO Pavel Svarc told the daily Lidove noviny (LN) the FNM should cover the costs of cleaning up damage caused by dioxins and mercury at the Neratovice-based plant. The government promised to take on part of the environmental cleanup burden when it sold its 82 % stake in Spolana to Unipetrol last fall.
