After weak readings in March and April, housing starts grew by 11.6% in May to a seasonably adjusted annual rate of 1.73 million units, according to Commerce Department figures.

Both single-family and multi-family starts grew significantly. Single-family housing starts rose 9.6% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.39 million units, while the more volatile multi-family market grew 20.3% to 344,000 units.
