They have been known to sour the smiles of the prettiest pageant contestants. Mothers fear them. Fathers curse them. Contestants practice for them.

The object of everyone's angst: dreaded on-stage questions that most pageants have these days. They are designed to test the mental agility of misses who crave titles.

In the world of pageants, they separate the women from the girls.

Heidi Watney of Fresno knows all about this. Four times she has competed in the Miss California USA Pageant, including this year's, now running in downtown Fresno.
