IT is the world-famous square that no longer looks world-class.
Blighted by traffic and pigeons, Trafalgar Square has become a shadow of the "grand piazza" envisaged when it was opened in 1840. But yesterday a [pound]25 million redesign of the square took a massive step forward when traffic was banned from its north side.
Work began to pedestrianise the North Terrace, linking the fountains and Nelson's Column to the National Gallery via a grand staircase. An open-air cafE is also planned to give the square a continental feel.
