VIRGINIA BEACH -- A 55-year-old Maryland man drowned Sunday while swimming near 25th Street in Oceanfront water, which was restricted to waist-deep wading because of rough surf conditions, police said.
Charles Alexander of Dunkirk, Md., was pulled from the water by lifeguards at about 10:52 a.m., and CPR efforts failed to revive him, said Mike Carey, police spokesman. Alexander was taken by paramedics to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital's trauma center, where he was pronounced dead. The death was determined to be accidental, Carey added.
