In a rare move, the Navy relieved the captain of the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier of his command Tuesday while on station in Japan, after his ship failed a safety assessment last week.
According to a 7th Fleet official, several incidents including major equipment problems, violations of curfew by junior members of the crew and a collision with a buoy in Singapore last winter, led to Capt. Thomas Hejl's reassignment.
