Centuries ago, Lisbon was the staging arena for Western Civilization. From its majestic bay sailed forth the explorers and traders who expanded the realm of Christendom beyond what could be imagined. Portugal's Lisbon was, of course, eventually eclipsed by Spain's raw military power and history does not give the due credit.

Today, however, Lisbon, flanking the southwestern outskirts of a still nascent European Union, is experiencing a rebirth of sorts. This renaissance is becoming ever more apparent in Lisbon and the neighboring coastal port of Porto.
