Hockey backers' millions impress NHL committee

Harry Cooper has attracted a group of local businessmen with a collective net worth exceeding $300 million as serious, potential investors in his plan to bring a National Hockey League franchise to San Diego in 1996.

Last week, Cooper's group, which includes local businessman Ballard Smith, remained a serious contender for one of six new NHL teams.

Cooper and sports attorney Scott Wolfe on Oct. 18 delivered a suitcase of documents and made a brief presentation to the NHL expansion committee in New York describing their plan for a new sports arena and hockey team to debut in the fall of 1996.
