2002 SEP 9 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The U.K. Medical Devices Agency has issued new advice on the potential risk of meningitis in patients with cochlear implants who have not been vaccinated.
The move follows a reported increase in the worldwide number of cases of bacterial meningitis in cochlear implant patients. Approximately 25 cases have been diagnosed in patients whose ages range from 21 months to 63 years. One U.K. patient has been diagnosed with suspected bacterial meningitis and successfully treated.
