Small stages face new challenges drawing audiences in the shadows of media giants
In the shadow of the gigantic film and television industries, the reviews for small theater in Los Angeles are mixed. While targeting specialized audiences has yielded sellout crowds for some theater owners, others decry a continuing lack of attention in the city to the stage.
"Theater is doing wonderfully," said Evelyn Rudie, artistic director of the Santa Monica Playhouse. "There's been a steady increase in the quality and quantity of theater [since she joined the playhouse in 1967]."
