LEEDS, England -- When Wal-Mart Stores Inc. acquired Asda PLC in 1999 for $10.8 billion, it obtained what was then the fourth-ranked food retailer in the United Kingdom in terms of sales. But as it turned out, it acquired a good deal more as well.

It added to its international portfolio a company with values and operating philosophies very much like its own. In fact, in the mid-1990s Asda management consciously adopted much of the Wal-Mart approach in their successful effort to ignite growth.
