NEW YORK -- Hair styles have long been a major way for teenagers to express themselves. In the 1950s the flattop and ducktail formed the archetypal image of teen boys of that decade, as did the ponytail for girls. In the 1960s long hair became a major symbol of the youthful rebellion that marked the era.

Hair fashions are still an important way for teens to define their appearance, and in terms of styles they have never had so many options. Anything from spikes to buzz cuts to retro-sixties long styles are considered acceptable.
