Sep. 7--Uncle Sam will decide this month whether BellSouth can offer long-distance service in South Carolina.
The Federal Communications Commission has until Sept. 18 to rule on the company's request to join the 70-plus companies already selling long-distance calls in the state.
The commission's vote should determine whether BellSouth also may offer long-distance in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and North Carolina.
BellSouth executives say the debut into South Carolina's $800 million long-distance market will mean lower rates.
