The zebra mussel, a foreign species that has ravaged the Great Lakes in recent years, has been found in a Northern Virginia pond, prompting state wildlife officials on Friday to urge boaters, scuba divers and utility owners to double-check their equipment for the fast-growing invader.
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries confirmed this week that ``a large population'' of zebra mussels was growing on the bottom of Millbrook Quarry, a freshwater pond and popular dive spot in Prince William County, said department spokesman David Whitehurst.
