President George Bush has appointed a Palatine resident to head up the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board.
The U.S. Senate confirmed the five-year appointment of Carolyn Merritt Aug. 1.
Merritt will now head the CSB, the federal agency in charge of determining root causes of major chemical accidents. The CSB does not issue fines or citations, but makes safety recommendations to government agencies, companies and other organizations in order to prevent future accidents.
