The principal techniques used in the production of chlorine and caustic soda are mercury electrolysis, (asbestos) diaphragm electrolysis and membrane electrolysis. These techniques have been reviewed in the context of the exchange of information on best available techniques (BAT) conducted in the context of the 96/61/EC IPPC Directive (integrated pollution prevention and control) by the European IPPC Bureau (the Joint Research Centre's Institute for prospective technological studies in Seville, Spain). The results of this analysis have been published in the form of a Reference Document on best available techniques available in the chlor-alkali and caustic soda industries. ...
