Reformulated gasolines-some not so reformulated-are springing up all over, stirring up gasoline competition and sending some oil companies back to refinery drawing boards. Reformulated gasolines are also laying the foundations for possible future public backlash and other serious complications. Reformulated gasolines could, in fact, create more problems than they solve.
In quick succession from last September until this May, seven oil companies introduced reformulated gasolines: Arco, Diamond Shamrock, Phillips, Marathon, Conoco, Shell and Exxon. More were surely on the way.
