Business is booming for the University Press of Mississippi.

And it's about time, says Richard Abel, director of the 20-year-old publishing company sponsored by the eight state-supported universities.

Five years ago, the company published 20 books a year and had an annual deficit that approached $100,000. This year operations not only stayed in the black, but sales increased almost 63 percent, topping the $1 million mark.

The fiscal year ending June 30 also handed the publisher its first "top 10" best seller - Photographs by Eudora Welty ($49.95) made the Washington Post non-fiction list in December. Profit on ...
