In 1988, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a report entitled The Future of Public Health [1], which included 55 recommendations directed at state health departments to improve public health practice in the United States. Following the IOM report, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) conducted a national survey of state health officers (*1) regarding these recommendations. This report summarizes the survey findings for 25 IOM recommendations.
