Very DIFFERENT from Rosovsky in another way is Killing the Spirit by Page Smith(viking, 315 pp., $19.95). Smith was the founding provost of the University of California at Santa Cruz. Like Trumpbour, he is totally denunciatory, not of Harvard, but of higher education generally. He too wants a revolution, character undefined, although spiritual, not political. The word " spiritual" is popular now with those who encourage a return to religion without having to defend any particular theology. In his revolt against scholarship, Smith avoids footnotes yet quotes frequently from authors whose texts we have no way of checking. I did check one reference in which Smith has Brooks ...
