The gap year is quickly becoming an institution--a rite of passage that is encouraged by educational establishments and looked upon favourably by employers. While those of previous generations who headed for the back of beyond were often considered `drop-outs', a year out is now viewed a life- and CV-enhancing experience, and one fit for Prince William. There's even a new word for those who undertake such a sabbatical--`gappers'.
