Attorney General Jim Doyle won the Democratic nomination for governor Tuesday and quickly turned his sights on Republican Gov. Scott McCallum, calling him "the loser" of the primary.
Doyle, addressing hundreds of cheering supporters at the Astor Hotel in Milwaukee shortly before midnight, credited his Democratic opponents, U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett and Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk, for refusing to run negative television ads despite a total of $3 million in campaign spending among all three candidates.
