Holland America Line is all about continuity, a hugely successful company dating back to 1873 and one of only two that successfully made the transition from ocean transportation to full-time leisure cruise travel.

Ship names are very much a part of the line's heritage, and the suffix "dam" has been applied to almost every passenger ship the company has owned. Today, the fleet consists of no less than 10 "dam" ships, the most in the company's history. and more are on order. Rotterdam is unquestionably the line's most famous name, its origins the Dutch port city that served as HAL's headquarters until the company moved first to New York then Seattle.
