The number of wireless LAN (WLAN) implementations in the United States has doubled over the last year, according to a report from IT analyst Yankee Group. According to a survey of corporate America, more than 700,000 enterprises are using about 1 million WLAN access points; this includes 11,000 large establishments.

WLAN deployments are also progressing on the consumer front, where access points are becoming more common in malls, restaurants, and other high-traffic locations.
