Article: The politics of chess. (Gary Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov, Mikhail Gorbachev)

THE first half of the World Chess Championship match began in Manhattan on October 8th and ended on November 7th. It was hard fought. The score now stands at six points for both the 27-year-old champion, Garry Kasparov, and for the 39-yearold challenger, Anatoly Karpov. The deciding half of the match will be played in Lyons, starting on November 24th. Mr Kasparov needs 12 points to retain his title, and Mr Karpov needs 12.5 points to win the match.
