His good hand clamped on the fat end of an aluminum baseball bat, his left arm useless and dangling like a puppet, and a dying young woman, her attacker and an empty handgun nearby, James Bennett had time for one clear thought:
Don't drop the bat.
"I wasn't going to let go," Bennett said yesterday from his hospital bed, retelling his failed attempt to save a neighbor he barely knew from her jilted, homicidal ex-boyfriend. "He grabbed the bat after he shot me and her, and if I didn't hold on, he would have been able to get a good swing."
