Introduction
On 6 May 2002, the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) government lifted a restriction on the movement of Aung San Suu Kyi, General Secretary of the National League for Democracy (NLD) and released her from house arrest. The government stated that the release would "mark the start of a new page for the people of Myanmar and the international community".
