The first thing I noticed about the official-looking envelope was the bold-face announcement: "Personal and Confidential." Then there was the embossed seal under the return address -- a bust of The Man himself, Joseph Pulitzer, magnate and standard-setter for American journalism.
My heart leapt as I read the letter's contents: "On behalf of Columbia University and The Pulitzer Prize Board, I have the honor to invite you to serve as a member of the Pulitzer Prize Nominating Juries in Journalism for 2002."
